The 2006 Alumni Meet ran a highly-successful competition on "Leadership in Education", with a rolling trophy awarded to a team from IIT Bombay. The trophy is still proudly displayed in the Director' Office at IITB. And the ideas generated then are now being pursued to fruition....
The theme for the 2008 edition is "Leadership in Research". While IITs are (rightly) regarded worldwide as leaders in undergraduate education, their research credentials are constantly being questioned. While views may differ on the magnitude of the issue, few would contest the fact that the research output of IITs is a step behind its delivery of high-quality UG students. The challenge is simple: Come up with a solution to IITs' research woes.
The winning Team will put together a position paper addressing the following:
| • |
Basic assumption regarding IITs' research priorities, |
| • |
Perceived deficiencies in IITs' current research infrastructure & ecosystem toward achieving these priorities, |
| • |
An optimum solution, and |
| • |
A validation mechanism to verify research excellence consistent with priorities. |

A view of the distinguished panel at one of the sessions |
Submissions were sought by July 31. Based on a review of submissions by a panel of experts, entries were short-listed, and the Top 6 teams have been invited to make presentations of their proposals before an elite panel and a large audience at one of the sessions in the "Research" track of the PanIIT2008 Alumni Meet. The winning Team will be selected and announced at the valedictory session of the Meet.
Each team comprised of faculty and alumni from a single IIT; the rolling trophy will be retained by the IIT campus represented by the winning team. At least, until PanIIT2010....
This competition is now closed, and no further submissions can be made.
